This MK5 example has a beautiful patina on the dial with yellow indices and a case that appears unpolished.The Mark II dial on this 1975 vintage 'Orange Hand' Explorer II has aged beautifully with the Tritium lume taking on a rich pumpkin tone over the years that complements the bold orange 24hour hand perfectly. The solid steel 1655 case is in superb condition with nice fat lugs and a superb Mk II brushed bezel. The 1655 is a very particular watch, a watch apart in the Rolex production. It doesn't share the aesthetic codes of the other watches, as the timeless " 3 / 6 / 9 dial of the Explorer, or the round circles of the Explorer II 16 570, Submariner, GMT or Sea Dweller. The reference 1655 is one of the references I am asked most often to find for collectors. This example is a very special Explorer II featuring the highly coveted double-signed dial by Tiffany & Co. It dates to circa 1978 with a 5.35 million serial number.
Unsurprisingly, for Rolex, features on the dial changed over the years of production. The following picture shows the various series of dials. At first glance, there may not seem to be many differences. Closer examination, however, shows key markers. Obviously, the “Rail Dial” in the middle stands out with its rail-alignment.
This one in particular is in excellent shape with a very thick case that has previously been polished and a beautiful saturated pumpkin patina on the dial. The dial is a MK1 variant. Dial: MK1. Insert: Period Correct MK2 Steel Bezel. Case: Excellent condition case. Bracelet: Oyster
